The Largest Educational Project by BVT in Amsterdam
On behalf of the ZAAM Scholengroep, we are upgrading the fire and smoke safety of 32 school buildings across Amsterdam.
A project of this magnitude is not only about technical execution but also about real impact. Every day, thousands of students, teachers, and staff use these buildings. Thanks to this large-scale safety upgrade, their protection against fire and smoke has been significantly improved.
This project raises the level of fire safety across the ZAAM education network to a sustainable, higher standard.
Project Scale
The project covers a wide network of schools, ranging from historic buildings to modern educational complexes, including:
- Cygnus Gymnasium
- Damstede Lyceum
- Gerrit van der Veen College
- Calvijn College
- Comenius Lyceum
- Over-Y College
- Xplore Amsterdam
- College Zuyd
- …and many other locations across Amsterdam.
Each school presents its own architectural challenges. Different construction years, varying structures, and intensive daily use make this a technically and logistically complex project.
This is precisely what makes this project unique.
What We Achieved
As part of this project, we have carried out:
- Fireproof sealing of penetrations
- Installation and restoration of smoke-proof systems
- Optimization of compartmentation
- Inspection and improvement of existing fire-resisting structures
- Structural quality assurance and documentation
These measures create a comprehensive system of fire and smoke compartments. In case of fire:
- Smoke spread is significantly reduced
- Evacuation routes remain safe for longer
- Emergency responders have more time
- Damage is minimized
Fire safety is not only about compliance with regulations. It’s about creating time, time to evacuate safely, time to save lives.
Smooth Execution Without Disruption
Working in an educational environment requires more than technical expertise. It demands insight, coordination, and collaboration.
Our work is carefully planned and executed so that daily teaching and learning can continue uninterrupted. We coordinate closely with school management and facilities teams, adjust schedules where needed, and phase the work to minimize disruption.
Classrooms remain usable.
Lesson schedules remain on track.
Schools continue to function.
Through clear communication and flexible planning, we increase safety without interfering with the educational process.
